Partner Working – comment from Phil Halse, Manufacturing Specialist for Devon
Over the years I have seen many companies reap the benefits of joining Manufacturing Networks and working together. I’m currently working with two companies which are struggling with a particular aspect of lean manufacturing. They are sharing their issues and working together as well as with MAS, to create a joined-up solution.
Networks offer member companies the chance to meet like-minded people and businesses to share best practice, while providing exposure to new business opportunities and the latest thinking, to overcome current business issues and challenges.
Several of the networks organise best practice visits to give an insight into another manufacturing operation. Manufacturers can come and compare their operation to that of a highly successful company, either giving them the confidence that they are on the right path or inspiring them to make the necessary changes to grow.
This familiarity between companies can develop a real confidence in the abilities of other firms, meaning an increase in referrals without the fear of losing business. By sharing and working together, individuals and companies that develop strong relationships and partnerships are actually better placed to find solutions to common problems without the fear of losing their competitive advantage.
Commenting on the benefits of networks and linking with MAS, Phil Scotcher, Chair of North Devon Manufacturers Association, said: “We have forged strong links with MAS over the past few years, which has helped grow our membership base and improve our offering to members. We get great insight into what is happening within manufacturing in other parts of the South West and are able to cooperate in activities such as Best Practice visits and Breakfast Briefings.”
