MAS helps local firms with unique behind-the-scenes tour
(L-R) Dave Masterson, Operations Manager at Metler Toledo, answering a question from an Aixtron Limited delegate
A division of the Mettler Toledo Group, the business - which manufactures x-ray inspection equipment with associated product handling - has seen significant year-on-year growth, 116% over the last four years. To support this rapid growth the company initiated an extensive lean training programme in late 2010 which, in line with its commitment to continuous improvement, is still on-going today.
The company has also worked with MAS, part of the Government-backed national organisation that supports small and medium sized manufacturers, to utilise a number of lean techniques – such as Value Stream Mapping, 5S and Kaizen – throughout its production processes. Inventory, tooling, components, assembly line and reporting have all been improved - resulting in substantial increases in productivity and quality levels and reduced cycle times.
The event, which took place over an afternoon, included presentations from Dave Masterson, Operations Manager and Andy Rance, Standard Product Leader, both from Mettler Toledo Safeline X-ray and Roy Matthews, MAS East advisor who has worked with the company over the last 12 months. It concluded with a tour of the facility and an in-depth look at the AdvanChek 3 Centre Section product line.
Attendee Brian Clarkstone, Technical Director of Biochrom, comments on the visit, “It is always useful to get another perspective and the representatives from Mettler Toledo Safeline X-Ray were very open and honest with us, which gave us great insight. It was particularly interesting to see successful, on-going change within a growing company.”
