National media interest in these statistics reflects recognition of the crucial importance the manufacturing sector is to the nation’s economic recovery. At the heart of this drive lie innovation, ambition and the tenacity of small and medium sized businesses.

Earlier this month I attended an engaging debate, entitled ‘Made in the South West’, which highlighted the opportunities and challenges facing SME manufacturers in today’s tough economic climate.

Featuring inspiring SME case studies, the event’s panel took questions from attendees focusing on important areas, including how to improve processes and efficiency to become more competitive, tackle financial needs and maximise export opportunities.

Well attended by manufacturers, we used the event to highlight the importance of ensuring that all those who support manufacturing (including academia) focus on what the sector is today, rather than what too many people still imagine it to be. Of the 13,000 manufacturers in the South West, 75 per cent have fewer than 10 employees. Less than 500 are large businesses.

This newsletter picks up some key themes from the event, which was hosted by South West Insider and chaired by the publication’s editor, Christian Annesley.

We would also like to take this opportunity to wish you all a peaceful festive season and a productive New Year.
