Groveley Engineering Precision Ltd SC21 Award

Working with the Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS), Groveley has achieved the SC21 bronze award by completing the SC21 national aerospace and defence sector improvement programme. At the time of writing, Groveley is one of only five companies in the South West of England to have achieved the accolade.

The manufacturing challenge

“The improvements made have allowed us to maintain our staff levels over the last 18 months. We have created additional capacity with current resource levels. We now have extra capacity which we are filling with new customers. This is as a result of the improved performance and new business opportunities realised through achieving the SC21 bronze award.” Peter Bennet, Managing Director, Groveley Precision Engineering Ltd

Groveley engaged with the SC21 programme to improve its position in the aerospace and defence sector, as the framework focuses on continuous and sustainable improvement. Having undertaken operational improvements before and found difficulty in maintaining changes, MAS worked through the SC21 programme with Groveley to achieve long-term improvements.

MAS Action

MAS provided hands-on support and planning, undertaking the roll-out of SC21 programme for Groveley. Working through the framework, MAS identified improvement programmes that Groveley should undertake to meet the criteria. The outcomes and opportunities were captured in the SC21 Continuous Sustainable Improvement Plan (CSIP). To achieve the improvement opportunities identified during the SC21 analysis, MAS supported Groveley through the Productivity and Competitiveness Programme (PAC) which links analysis of business performance with training for shopfloor employees. Guided by MAS, an improvement team from Groveley carried out 5S activity identifying areas for development and creating standard operating procedures including a new set-up process and regular maintenance activities on a key CNC lathe in the workshop. This high impact project led to a rapid 41% reduction in set-up time on the CNC lathe.

Results

The improvement programme, initiated through the SC21 framework, has achieved dramatic results. The business now has the tools to sustain both productivity improvements and maintain its competitive edge.

“The whole team has been enthusiastic towards implementing improvements identified by the SC21 assessments and they have embraced change. There is a real culture of continuous improvement within the business. The SC21 bronze award was the icing on the cake and well deserved.” MAS Advisor

Groveley has also witnessed a much improved work flow, increased profits and new-found confidence in its workforce. The improvements made as a result of the SC21 programme will enable Groveley to become more competitive with future contracts.

Groveley’s achievements were recognised at the Farnborough Airshow when the company received the coveted SC21 bronze award from the UK AeroSpace, Defence and Security industries national trade body, A|D|S.
