The Manufacturing Challenge
BLEC Global Ltd has earned a considerable reputation for manufacturing and supplying quality equipment for the preparation of golf courses, sportsfields, turf farms and amenity areas right through from earthmoving to finish seeding, and then with the Turfcare range of machinery to maintain and improve established grassed areas, thus providing a comprehensive range of specialised equipment.
BLEC were considering embarking on a project to design a multi use landscaping implement for tractors, which required detailed design and development into a modular concept. Managing Director, Gary Mumby, got in contact the Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS) for assistance with the first prototype and product proving and testing.
MAS Action
MAS Advisor Ross Ryan performed a review with Gary and identified that: “in order to meet key product launch timescales, BLEC Global required support with aspects of the detail design and consultancy support on design for manufacture of this new modular design concept.”
Following the detailed review with the specialist MAS Advisor, Gary was put into contact with several consultants who could provide the required design support. BLEC Global decided to select expert consultants P.H & S.D Hall Engineering of Kings Lynn, who carried out the design and consultancy work on the new prototype Multivator at the BLEC Global premises. This included design and drawings in 3D Solid Works.
Results
The project successfully led to the manufacture of the new Multivator, which was exhibited at the GIS Show in Orlando, USA, receiving a great reaction. The new innovative design enables the operator to interchange various attachments to transform the Multivator into a multi-task machine.
BLEC Global Managing Director, Gary Mumby said: “'This new design has been developed by our own engineers working with specialist technicians brought in with the assistance from MAS East Midlands. I must give particular praise to MAS Advisor, Ross Ryan, who has given us exceptional advice and help which has enabled a small growing company like BLEC to develop this new design and bring it to the world market place in a relatively short space of time and without their help this would not have been possible. We anticipate a great future for this product with orders already placed from all around the world”
As a direct result of the MAS support, BLEC were able to create a new job for an engineer at their workshop in Crowland. Gary Mumby also received training on product design and an estimated £70,000 of new business has been generated by the project.
